Forces in Everything

The symmetry of physics through the lens

I paused the camera before a gust of wind, a beam of light, and a quiet sheet of water. Inside these ordinary scenes, there is motion, and there are the forces that make motion possible.

Four ways of seeing

These photographs were landscapes first. Only later did they become physics.

When I took them, I did not begin with formulas. What made me stop was the moment a bridge nearly met its reflection, the weight of a cable car suspended in air, and the rhythm of waves crossing the same stretch of shore again and again.

Looking back, the invisible forces began to take shape: piers receiving loads, cables holding tension, water bending the path of light, and rock faces keeping the record of long erosion. This work does not add a single answer to the scenery; it invites us to stay a little longer and rediscover physics in the familiar.

Symmetry & Balance

The span of a bridge, the center of gravity of a building, and a lake's reflection all ask the same question: how does something remain stable while forces act on it? Symmetry in a photograph is never perfectly rigid; ripples, distance and viewpoint leave small variations inside the order.

Best viewed by slowly comparing both sides of the image, and the differences between object and reflection.

Read force through direction

Motion & Force

A train moves along its track, a cable car hangs from a line, and a turbine turns airflow into rotation. Motion does not appear from nowhere; traces, angles and connections in the image help reveal where force comes from.

Follow the track, cable and blades, then imagine where the object will be in the next second.

Watch how ripples change light

水与光Water & Light

Water can support a boat and also redirect light. Moonlit reflections, bright underwater lines and wakes behind boats all come from a surface that never holds still. The same water gives different answers under different light.

Find the brightest and darkest areas first, then see how they spread along the ripples.

Treat form as a record of time

Land, Sea & Structure

The outlines of rock walls, islands and trees are not only scenery; they are the result of long exposure to forces. Gravity, waves, temperature changes and wind keep working. Hard materials crack; flexible ones answer by bending.

Start with cracks, slopes and curves, then look for where the material has changed.

Focus 01 · Symmetry & Balance

Above the water, the bridge gains a second structure.

Night hides much of the bridge's material detail, leaving the outline drawn by light. The water sends that light back to the camera, joining arch and reflection into an almost complete oval.

But it is not a mechanical copy. Wind changes the local angle of reflection, softening, stretching and sometimes breaking the edge of the reflection. Those imperfect details keep symmetry alive.

Light passes through water and draws a moving net.

The bright lines in the photograph are not on the surface, but below it. A moving surface redirects light, gathering some rays into fine bright lines while leaving other areas darker.

With even a small movement of the water, the whole net changes. It has no fixed pattern; each second is redrawn by a new wave surface.
